Video Project Rough Cut

How did you intend to visually communicate your themes/ideas to the viewer in terms of the formal qualities of your video (i.e., describe the pace/flow of the video, the types of imagery used and why, the relevance of the audio, etc.).
For my video project, I wished to convey the feeling of loneliness and its effects on the brain. I decided to try and incorporate the color and composition of my shots in a way that evokes feelings of isolation or abandonment. The audio I included in my video is meant to correlate with the hypersensitivity and hyper awareness that individuals experience when they are in a constant state of seclusion.

Describe the content-based research you engaged with. Without discussing any expressive aspects of the video, discuss how this research informed the production of your work and helped you to critically engage with your ideas.
The content-based research I engaged with included articles that described the neurological effects of loneliness on animals and the way their resulting behavior can be observed in humans who experience the same type of isolation. Since animals isolated from their groups are consequently placed in an increased amount of danger, their senses respond instinctively by become hyper aware of their surroundings. In humans, this effect causes sufferers to over analyze or solely focus on the negativity that they experience every day while ignoring any positive events that simultaneously occur. They are thus subject to a cycle of stress, anxiety, and loneliness.

Do you believe that the audio of the video engages successfully with the concept of hyper sensitivity? How do you think the audio could be strengthened?

Do the shots function appropriately in terms of length and composition? What effect do they have on you as a viewer?

  1. Great video angela-maria! The video definitley provokes loneliness. I was constantly looking for the subject of the video, only to not be shown any one specific subject in any of the videos. I especially like the hand scenes.

The sound goes very well. The sound is super sensitive to the wind in some of the clips which correlates to the hypersensitivity aspect. When the wind blows out the speaker because it is too sensitive is a great example of this in the video. I think it would be interesting to maybe replay a short loop of the fuzzy wind sound. In this sense it will distort the noise into something possibly new. If you don't like that idea thats okay! I think some repetitive sounds maybe in the black frames would be cool to link the videos together also.

Overall, very good video and your ideas are coming across nicely!

  2. This video really conveyed the sense of loneliness and left me with a sense of discomfort (this is a positive thing I swear). It was really interesting how the interplay of natural and man-made objects have achieved to display the effects on the brain.

I believe the audio corresponds well with the videos. I really enjoy the heightened sounds of the wind. To further this I would include more intense sounds of natural or man-made objects included in this already. Such as the jingle of rings clinking together or the sounds of leaves rustling. I feel like the contrast of toned down noises compared to the higher volumes plays well together.

I really enjoy how the shots are almost all as similar length. There is a progression in time that flows very well as well as keeping the images connected by including the same subjects without direct repetition.

  3. Great video! I really do get the feeling of loneliness. The empty spaces really help with the visual aesthetic in understanding the loneliness. Also the the audio goes well, I really like how it is not just one audio but a variety of different sounds that compliment the visuals. An aspect that I think is really strong in this video is that the clips and shots in this video are all sequential having the same amount of length. To answer your question about audio, I think if it had more of a transition it would work a bit better.
